Specific report footers and the in-app dataset catalog are the authoritative source record for an output. Preserve those citations when publishing maps, reports, screenshots, or derived files.
Public data
- U.S. Census Bureau: Decennial Census, American Community Survey, Public Law 94-171 redistricting data, TIGER/Line geography, and related tables and metadata.
- U.S. Geological Survey and Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium: National Land Cover Database, where enabled.
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: EnviroAtlas materials, where enabled.
- U.S. Census Bureau LEHD/LODES data, where enabled.
Maps and basemaps
OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database License. Basemap tiles may also be provided by CARTO or other named providers under their applicable terms. Do not remove on-map attribution.
Election data
The 2020 presidential precinct layer, when enabled, uses The Upshot / New York Times Presidential Precinct Map 2020 dataset under the MIT License. Its copyright and license notice is distributed with CensusOS. Election coverage is incomplete in some states and is not an official certification.
Open-source software
CensusOS uses open-source components including MapLibre GL JS, PMTiles, Leaflet, Turf, TopoJSON, and Proj4. Each component remains governed by its own license. Repository dependency manifests and distributed library headers contain the applicable notices.
